Abstract
Chordal and factor-width decomposition methods for semidefinite
programming and polynomial optimization have recently enabled the
analysis and control of large-scale linear systems and medium-scale
nonlinear systems. Chordal decomposition exploits the sparsity of
semidefinite matrices in a semidefinite program (SDP), in order to
formulate an equivalent SDP with smaller semidefinite constraints
that can be solved more efficiently. Factor-width decompositions,
instead, relax or strengthen SDPs with dense semidefinite matrices
into more tractable problems, trading feasibility or optimality for
lower computational complexity. This article reviews recent advances
in large-scale semidefinite and polynomial optimization enabled by
these two types of decomposition, highlighting connections and
differences between them. We also demonstrate that chordal and
factor-width decompositions allow for significant computational
savings on a range of classical problems from control theory, and on
more recent problems from machine learning. Finally, we outline
possible directions for future research that have the potential to
facilitate the efficient optimization-based study of increasingly
complex large-scale dynamical systems.

Abstract
This paper presents a distributed model predictive control (DMPC)
algorithm for heterogeneous vehicle platoons with unidirectional
topologies and a priori unknown desired set point. The vehicles (or
nodes) in a platoon are dynamically decoupled but constrained by
spatial geometry. Each node is assigned a local open-loop optimal
control problem only relying on the information of neighboring
nodes, in which the cost function is designed by penalizing on the
errors between the predicted and assumed trajectories. Together with
this penalization, an equality-based terminal constraint is proposed
to ensure stability, which enforces the terminal states of each node
in the predictive horizon equal to the average of its neighboring
states. By using the sum of local cost functions as a Lyapunov
candidate, it is proved that asymptotic stability of such a DMPC can
be achieved through an explicit sufficient condition on the weights
of the cost functions. Simulations with passenger cars demonstrate
the effectiveness of the proposed DMPC.

Abstract
Optimization over non-negative polynomials is fundamental for
nonlinear systems analysis and control. This work investigates the
relation between three tractable relaxations for optimizing over
sparse non-negative polynomials: sparse sum-of-squares (SSOS)
optimization, diagonally dominant sum-of-squares (DSOS)
optimization, and scaled diagonally dominant sum-of-squares (SDSOS)
optimization. We prove that the set of SSOS polynomials, an inner
approximation of the cone of SOS polynomials, strictly contains the
spaces of sparse DSOS/SDSOS polynomials. For problems with sparse
polynomials, therefore, SSOS optimization is less conservative than
its DSOS/SDSOS counterparts. Numerical results for large-scale
sparse polynomial optimization problems demonstrate this fact, and
also that SSOS optimization can be faster than DSOS/SDSOS methods
despite requiring the solution of semidefinite programs instead of
less expensive linear/second-order cone programs.

Abstract
We propose an efficient first-order method, based on the alternating
direction method of multipliers (ADMM), to solve the homogeneous
self-dual embedding problem for a primal-dual pair of semidefinite
programs (SDPs) with chordal sparsity. Using a series of block
eliminations, the per-iteration cost of our method is the same as
applying a splitting method to the primal or dual alone. Moreover,
our approach is more efficient than other first-order methods for
generic sparse conic programs since we work with smaller
semidefinite cones. In contrast to previous first-order methods that
exploit chordal sparsity, our algorithm returns both primal and dual
solutions when available, and a certificate of infeasibility
otherwise. Our techniques are implemented in the open-source MATLAB
solver CDCS. Numerical experiments on three sets of benchmark
problems from the library SDPLIB show speed-ups compared to some
common state-of-the-art software packages.
